The Scale Ticket

Her name is at the bottom of every page. She did not read the one her father signed.

Solveig Pratt weighs grain for a living on the Missouri River, and the ticket she signs at the end of every load is the only true sentence anybody in the business says out loud.

She has been in Council Bluffs eleven months. She took the job because a licensed weigher went off a bridge in 2011 and they called it a suicide, and he was her father, and he never folded anything in his life.

On the first Monday in June she is in the scale house after hours with her hands on the man who owns the place, and over his shoulder the indicator is moving with nothing on the deck.

Renard Beauvais came out of Gonaives at nine with a plastic bag and built a river terminal out of twenty years in the pit. He wants financing for a second loop track. He is not asking who the grain in the back of his pile belongs to, because the day he asks, he finds out.

And on the conveyor gallery, an old man who retired in 2009 lowers a camera. Ordell Pyle has photographed every scale ticket that crossed this ground since 2003. He mailed the archive twice. Nobody ever came.

A quarter of the grain in that pile is not titled to anybody who knows it is there. The weight is right at the terminal and wrong at the railroad, and the difference is booked as shrink, and the shrink is the same number every month, and shrink is never the same number twice.

By the second week of July, Solveig Pratt is standing in a certified scale house at five in the morning with two tickets in front of her. One of them saves the man she cannot stay away from. One of them is true.

A Books By Barron erotic thriller. Very explicit throughout. Adults only.
