Some Interests Should Never Be Taken

The first time Dessa Laval laid eyes on August Bellamy she thought he was one of those Tulane looking Creole boys who says my people when he means his grandmother. He was standing in the lobby of her family’s hotel with outside coffee on her clean counter, and she could not stand his ass on sight.

She was twenty six, working the front desk of a building with her own name on it, wearing a name tag nobody had ever asked her about. He asked. He put both hands flat on her counter and waited nine seconds for an answer she did not have, and it took her twelve years to understand what that was.

Eleven weeks. Room nine, the corner room that floods, because it was the one nobody booked. A towel under the door and a stain on the wall watching them like a chaperone. Then a storm off the Gulf, a broken glass, and her father in the doorway at half past ten at night in his undershirt.

August Bellamy walked out of that hotel on the tenth of October and did not come back for twelve years, and when he did he owned fifty one percent of her grandfather’s company.

She has spent every day since running it for him. She is thirty eight now, she is the president, and she is going to take it back.

What she does not know is that her father did not sell her. He built a cage, and he built it around the only man who ever made her say out loud what she wanted.

There is a key card in her wallet that has not opened a door since 2016. She has never once been able to say why she keeps it.
