Seven hundred and eleven thousand seven hundred and seventy eight Americans were drawing Social Security outside the United States in December 2024. The category that sells them advice runs on a monthly average the Social Security Administration does not publish, and on the promise that a person can live like royalty somewhere warm on twelve hundred dollars a month.

This book does something else. Fourteen countries, each one with a real retirement or passive income visa, priced against the United States on rent, utilities, groceries and a meal out, with the income threshold each government actually asks for and what the application costs to file. Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Ghana and Belize.

Every figure carries its source and the date somebody checked it, beside the number rather than in a bibliography at the back. Where the research could not confirm a figure against a source worth trusting, the book says so and leaves it blank. There are about a hundred of those, and not one of them is filled in with a plausible guess.

It is written for Black American retirees and it says so. Every country chapter answers the question a general guide never answers, with data where data exists and a refusal where it does not, and it never ranks a country as safe or unsafe. Ghana is here for the Right of Abode, the only legal route in this book that exists for the African diaspora specifically, and for the correction that the separate diaspora citizenship programme has been suspended since February and is still being advertised as open.
